If your ship is calling at the St. Thomas cruise port, this guide covers what most port pages skip: which dock you’re actually arriving at, how taxis really work here, how to plan around your all-aboard time, and what fits into a day ashore. The two cruise docks in St. Thomas

St. Thomas has two cruise ship docks, about a 10 minute drive apart on either side of Charlotte Amalie harbor.

Havensight: the West Indian Company Dock (WICO)

Three berths, owned and managed by The West Indian Company Limited, which publishes its own ship schedule. Havensight sits about 1.5 miles from downtown Charlotte Amalie, roughly a 30 minute walk along the waterfront, and the Paradise Point Skyride is a short walk from the pier.

Crown Bay: the Austin “Babe” Monsanto Marine Terminal

Two berths, owned and managed by the Virgin Islands Port Authority, which publishes downloadable Crown Bay cruise schedules. Crown Bay is about 2 miles from downtown.

Which dock you get depends on your cruise line and the day’s traffic, so check your cruise line’s port information rather than assuming. Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender guests ashore when berths are full; your line will tell you in advance.

Taxis in St. Thomas: how they actually work

There is no Uber or Lyft on St. Thomas. Ground transport is licensed taxis, and many of them are open-air safari trucks or vans that carry 8 to 12 passengers. Licensed taxis display a dome light and the letters TP on their license plate, per the Port Authority’s ground transport guidance.

Rates are set per person, by destination, by the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission, not by meter. Confirm your total fare with the driver before you board. Some published per-person rates from the Commission’s tariff:

Taxis line up at both docks when ships are in, so getting a ride out is easy. For the trip back, agree on a pickup time with your driver or allow time to flag one down, especially on multi-ship days.

Plan backwards from all-aboard, not forward from arrival

The one rule of a cruise port day: the ship keeps its schedule, not yours. Royal Caribbean, for example, publishes that all-aboard is scheduled approximately 30 minutes before sailing and posted near the gangway, and every line states plainly that the ship will not wait for guests who are ashore on their own. Each line sets its own final boarding time, so verify yours onboard before you head out.

So plan the day backwards. Take your all-aboard time, subtract a comfortable buffer for the taxi ride and the walk down the pier, and that’s your real deadline. Choose everything you book against that number, not against how long the activity sounds.

Get on the water

Beaches

Magens Bay is the island’s best-known beach and a straightforward taxi ride from either dock using the rates above. Lindbergh Bay sits close to Crown Bay if you docked on that side and want sand within a few minutes’ ride.

Downtown Charlotte Amalie

Duty-free shopping, the historic waterfront, and lunch in town are the classic port-day fillers, and downtown is a short, cheap taxi hop from either dock. From Havensight you can walk it in about half an hour if you’d rather stretch your legs.

A sample port day

Say your ship is alongside from morning until early evening. A day that works:

1. Taxi from the dock after breakfast.
2. A half day snorkeling excursion, timed against your all-aboard.
3. Back toward town for lunch and an hour of shopping in Charlotte Amalie.
4. At the gangway with your buffer intact.
